go to top   A Cargo Jet Aircraft Altitude Control by Fuzzy PD Controller

Abstract - Maintaining desired flight conditions in flight envelope for a long period is one of the primary control problems in aircraft flight control. A control system (classical control systems) designed for a flight condition, may not provide the desired stability and performance characteristics in case of deviation from the equilibrium point. There are numerous studies regarding flight control in the literature. Most of the applications about the design of fuzzy flight control are in simulation level. Fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) from their inception have demonstrated a vast range of applicability to processes where the plant transfer function is not defined but the control action can be described in terms of linguistic variables. Fuzzy controllers are also being used to improve the performance of a system where the plant transfer function is known. In this study, the design of fuzzy proportional derivative (PD) controller for the aircraft altitude control system is analyzed and the results for a very large, four-engined cargo jet aircraft are evaluated in a MATLAB coded program.

go to top   Practical Advanced Aerospace Manufacturing and Assembly Projects for Engineering Technology Students

Abstract - As the challenges of aviation and the complexity of the aircraft has increased over the first 100 years of flight, so have the demands on the engineering programs serving the aerospace industry. Faced with credit hour limitations and additional subjects to cover, engineering has been forced to make difficult and costly decisions regarding curriculum. As a result, engineering science and other advanced coursework have been added at the cost of nearly all practical education and practice. New engineers entering the workforce now have a strong background in the science of engineering and research practice, but little experience in practical engineering. Feedback from industry leaders during this same timeframe has indicated that new engineers lack practical knowledge relating to materials and machine design, particularly in life cycle and technology support issues in the field. The faculty of Aeronautical Engineering Technology at Purdue University, realizing that a serious gap in important skills and experience existed, examined their program for ways to improve the curriculum and better prepare students for the demands of the workforce. It was agreed that engineering and engineering technology students should combine their strengths, and collaborate on projects of significant complexity and challenge. New senior design project courses were introduced in which undergraduate engineering and technology students work closely together to design, manufacture, and test a “real world” project. The engineering technology students brought a foundation in materials and manufacturing design and strong “hands-on” skills, while the engineering students brought knowledge in design and the prediction of operation and failure to these collaborative projects. This paper will discuss the projects that interdisciplinary student groups have made. The secondary strategy to improve hands-on skills is to involve undergraduate students in funded research projects to work closely with faculty and to be responsible for research, project management, tooling, development of test and research protocol, and testing.

go to top   Design of a Dust Tolerant Quick-Connect Cryogenic Coupler for the Lunar Environment

Abstract - The design of a cryogenic coupler for refueling lunar exploration hardware with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen is presented. The coupler must be able to withstand cryogenic liquids in the Moon environment, which includes both thermal isolation and hermetic isolation from Moon dust. An electrostatic coupler based on an electric curtain is proposed to prevent dust penetration. The coupler must also be easily connected and disconnected by an astronaut in a space-suit. This paper describes how the novel coupler works, how the electric curtain is embedded, and the basic layout of the electrical and mechanical components. Since cryogens may boil at the temperatures found on the Moon, a vacuum chamber is also utilized. However, the main goal of this design is to avoid dust penetration into both the coupler and cryogenic fluids.

go to top   Stabilization of an Under-Actuated X4-Flyer using Adaptive Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller

Abstract - The drawbacks of Sliding Mode Control (SMC) in terms of high control gains and chattering are overcome by merging of the Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) with the variable structure of the SMC to form a Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller (FSMC). This paper presents the study of stabilization with motion planning of the four rotors mini-flying robot (helicopter with four rotors) through the hybrid FSMC. Simulation results and a comparison with a SMC are presented and discussed. We studied the robustness of the two used controllers in the presence of disturbances. We presented the case of the white noise disturbances. This permits to prove the effectiveness of the proposed control law.

go to top   Quantifying Quality Operational Costs in a Multi-Agent System for Airline Operations Recovery

Abstract - When recovering from operational problems, the Airline Operations Control Centre (AOCC) usually tries to minimize direct operational costs while satisfying all the required rules. In this paper we present the implementation of a Distributed Multi-Agent System (MAS) representing the existing real-life roles in an AOCC. This MAS includes software agents that cooperate through a distributed problem solving approach, to find the best solution for each problem. We propose a general approach to quantify quality operational costs, so that passengers’ satisfaction can also be considered in the final decision. We present a real case study to introduce our approach to quantify the quality operational costs and solve several real unexpected crew problems. We show that our MAS with quality costs is able to reduce flight delays and increase passenger satisfaction without increasing significantly the direct operational costs. A comparison with two other methods is presented.

go to top   Analysis of Effective Parameters on Magnetizer Using Finite Element Method

Abstract - Permanent magnets due to their high energy production are widely used in a variety of electromagnetic devices. Such devices can be found in marine, aerospace, and robotic applications which require the minimization of weight and volume of the electro- magnetic devices. The coercively of some permanent magnets are high so the magnetizer is used for high magnetic field generation. Different parameters such as core shape, core material, turn number, cross section of the air gap, magnet type, etc have been known to affect the magnetizer operation. The amplitude and waveform of fixture current is obtained from PSPICE simulations and also experimental measurement. A 2D finite element analysis is developed to simulate magnetic fields and mechanical forces. The main parameters affecting optimal design of the magnetizer are discussed. Simulation results show that the core structure, air gap width, and turn numbers are the most important parameters when designing such a device.

Abstract - The Air France-KLM merger, followed suit by the Lufthansa-Swiss merger announcement and the agreement of a new transatlantic air transport accord, has changed the landscape of air transport and set the foundation stone towards air transport consolidation. Once considered a remote eventuality, cross-border mergers and the potential they represent have become a concrete possible source of competitive advantage in the search of efficiencies and synergies in a highly competitive and volatile air transport arena. The present paper attempts to assess how the members of the three strategic alliances (Star Alliance, oneworld and SkyTeam) perceive alliance evolution and merger prospects under the impact of these developments. Through a questionnaire survey the paper analyzes how airlines themselves view mergers, what benefits mergers can offer as well as the obstacles they might encounter and in which areas these benefits and/or problems could arise. It further to assess how fast consolidation will move, what role alliances will play in the emerging restructured air transport industry and how alliances and mergers will interact. As it is the very first survey to focus on and analyze cross-border mergers from the industry’s point of view, its findings will be of interest not only to the industry itself but to governments, competition authorities, academics and to all those directly or indirectly involved in and/or influenced by developments in air transport.
